Wisconsin’s First Black Architect: Alonzo Robinson, Jr.
Milwaukee Public Library and Docomomo Wisconsin present a lecture by UWM architectural historian Justin Miller on Wisconsin’s first Black architect, Alonzo Robinson Jr..
This program celebrates the remarkable 40-year career of Alonzo Robinson, Jr., whose work made lasting contributions to Milwaukee’s Black community and to the city as a whole. His best-known projects include Central City Plaza—recently saved from demolition—and the Milwaukee Fire Department Administration Building, recently named and dedicated in recognition of his achievements. His legacy also lives on in numerous neighborhood churches, homes, businesses, and municipal buildings throughout Milwaukee.
Robinson’s son, Kim Robinson, will participate in a Q&A following the lecture. Docomomo Wisconsin will present a pop-up exhibit and share their work advocating for and preserving Modern Milwaukee architecture. The program will also feature Robinson’s original architectural drawings and materials from MPL’s Archives.
