Lecture by Justin Miller
Architectural historian Justin Miller presents A-Frames & Flying Saucers: Modernist Religious Architecture in Wisconsin, a dynamic lecture exploring the postwar boom in sacred modernist design across Wisconsin. Focusing on iconic examples such as Frank Lloyd Wright’s Unitarian Meeting House in Madison and the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, Miller examines the social, cultural, and architectural forces behind this wave of spiritual modernism.
Tracing Wright’s influence on a generation of Wisconsin architects, the talk highlights how the optimism of the mid-century era found expression in A-frame sanctuaries, domed chapels, and sculptural concrete forms that redefined the relationship between faith and modern design.
This program complements Docomomo US/Wisconsin’s “Divine Line” initiative, which documents and celebrates the state’s modernist religious architecture through tours, lectures, and ongoing research.
